In this article, we are going to discuss how registry repair programs work, with an emphasis on RegClean. This product was developed by a company called 2Squared Software. RegClean is relatively new, at least compared to other registry cleaners.

Let's look at the characteristics of registry cleaners such as RegClean. XP, Vista and other Windows platforms rely on the registry in order to operate. Windows would not run if it were not for the registry. All kinds of files are stored in this giant database, and new files are being added all of the time. This happens when you add new software and hardware programs to the system, but it also occurs each time you check out a website. Because of this, the registry just keeps getting bigger and bigger, and eventually it gets so big and bloated that other applications will slow, and your computer will suffer a number of problems. These issues include freezes and crashes, slow start ups and shut downs, and web surfing that moves at a snail's pace.

A registry cleaner will scan your PC and find errors and corrupted files, giving you the option to get rid of them. The best registry repair programs will also shut off programs that you never use and are only wasting system resources. Also, the best registry cleaners will let you schedule future scans.

Popular software products such as RegCure Registry Cleaner are often plagued by software piracy, which, unfortunately, is very common these days. Many people may unknowingly commit copyright infringement acts by downloading license keys from shady sources on the Internet, which is both a personal risk, and a criminally punishable offense in most countries, including the US and Europe.

Read this article to make sure you know about the risks and threats involved in downloading illegal copies of computer software such as RegCure Registry Cleaner, before you get into trouble without even realizing it.

What is software piracy?

Internet software piracy is one of the most common type of copyright infringement today. It includes practices and activities which involve unauthorized copying or downloading of computer software. If we take RegCure as an example, downloading or uploading copies of this software using BitTorrent or other P2P technology such as eMule or Kazaa constitutes piracy, as does downloading illegal license keys for RegCure.

What are the legal risks of software piracy and why should you care?

As stated above, software piracy is a criminal offense punishable by law in most countries. Because software piracy is widespread, vendors and copyright protection organizations are pushing harder and harder to combat it.

In the past few years there have been quite a few high-profile cases of lawsuits against users downloading or distributing software illegally. A recent example involves 26-year-old Daniel Dove convicted by the federal jury for both felony copyright infringement and conspiracy. Dove now faces up to 10 years in prison, according to the US Department of Justice. Other persons involved in this case plead guilty, served several months in prison, and paid fines of $3,000.

What you should know when using P2P to avoid legal charges

What many users don't know, is that P2P technology like BitTorrent makes it incredibly easy to track the IP address (and often the postal address and other personally identifiable information) of the unsuspecting user. Which means downloading RegCure license keys from illegal or shady sources puts people at risk of being identified and charged.

What is even more dangerous, is that peer-to-peer technology by its very design makes every user a distributor of the item being downloaded, since every file is "seeded", that is, shared, at the time of download. And since distributing illegal software is a more serious offense than simply downloading it, to avoid civil or criminal charges users should stay clear of untrusted download sources.

What are other threats of illegal downloads?

Many sites that distribute illegal license keys for software such as RegCure will try to hijack your browser, or install spyware or adware on your PC. A machine can be completely compromised and becomes a "zombie", which means it can be used to send spam, worms, and other malware and infect other PCs without the consent or knowledge of the PC owner.

P2P software is often guilty of the same thing. The notorious Kazaa software, according to Wikipedia (see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kazaa#Bundled_malware), includes 2 spyware, 3 adware, and 3 hijackers, which are secretly installed on the user's machine without the possibility to uninstall.

How to stay safe

To be safe, users should stay away from untrusted sites that offer to download illegal copies, keys or licenses for popular software such as RegCure, and install a reputable antivirus and antispyware application to help prevent attacks on their PCs.

Some people may resort to illegal downloads because they simply can't afford expensive software. With RegCure, this is simply not the case, as it retails for only $29.95. If you are considering this registry cleaner, and want to purchase a legal RegCure license key, Chris offers coupons for RegCure (35% OFF), as well as RegCure discounts at his site, BestPricePicker.Com.

Copyright 2008 Chris Finders

MSConfig is a utility program for Windows PCs. It allows you to view and edit many different settings related to your PC's operation. Many of these settings reside in the registry of your PC. The registry is a database that was created by Microsoft a number of years ago to provide a place to store information about the hardware and software configuration of your PC.

MSConfig is more than just an editor of these settings. After you have made a change using MSConfig it monitors the changes you have made and controls the startup of your system based on these changes.
Show me the program! Many Windows PCs already MSConfig installed. To find out:

Locate your Windows menu, then click "Start" (or the Orb if you are using Windows Vista).

At this point click "Run"
If you do not have a "Run" option? Search the internet for how to enable the "Run" option on your start menu.

Type "msconfig.exe" (without the quotes) and click "OK".

If that does not work for starting up MSConfig, it may not be on your PC or it may not be in the search path for executing programs. You might try looking in this directory: c:/windows/pchealth/helpctr/binaries (forward slash should be replaced with backslash, ezinearticles doesn't seem to like backslashes) with File Explorer or My Computer. If you find it you can just double-click on the "exe" file to start it. If you do not find "MSConfig.exe" on your machine, then go to Microsoft's website and do a search for "msconfig.exe". Download the appropriate version for your version of Windows.

After MSConfig starts up a window is displayed containing tabs for setting different options. On machines running Windows such as Windows 2000 and Windows XP the window display six tabs: "General", "SYSTEM.INI", "WIN.INI", "BOOT.INI", "Services" and "Startup". On Windows Vista machines the window will display five tabs: "General", "Boot", "Services", "Startup", and "Tools". Microsoft is moving away from using the "SYSTEM.INI" and "WIN.INI" files with Vista. The "SYSTEM.INI" and "WIN.INI" tabs have been removed and a new tab "Tools" is shown. One minor annoyance is that this window is not resizable.

Click the "Startup" tab. This window displays information which comes from different places, but much of the information is from the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run (I have replaced the backslash with a forward slash in this key, ezinearticles does not seem to like backslashes) key in your registry. As I mentioned earlier, the window is not resizable, but at least the columns are resizable. And since some registry keys are quite long you may have to enlarge and reduce the columns to see all of an item. The items that are registry keys (e.g. starting with "HKLM") could be edited with a program called RegEdit, but that can corrupt your registry if you make a mistake.

With MSConfig you will notice that there are checkboxes next to the startup items. Caution! If you are uncertain what these items represent, then just look! If you uncheck an item, it will not be run at the next startup. Unchecking an item does not remove it from your system, it just disables it. If you uncheck an item and click the "Apply" button, MSConfig will prompt you to restart your system or exit without restart. One item that I frequently uncheck are programs that bug me to do an update. These reminder programs consume memory and sit ion my system tray unnecessarily. Apple Quicktime and Adobe Reader are two examples. If you have unchecked any items, then MSConfig will monitor your system at startup thereafter and prevent them from running. One slightly confusing aspect of MSConfig's operation is that it will present you with the option to restart your system or exit without restarting each time your system starts. Ordinarily you will click the exit without restarting option.

If you wish to restore your system to regular operation, then just re-check any boxes you unchecked, click the "Apply" button and MSCOnfig will not run at startup.

Mike Furlong

When I'm not working on the Internet, I'm playing on the Internet!
For more about registry cleaners, visit:
Registry Cleaners

With so many registry cleaners for Windows XP available on the market today, PC users have hard time choosing the right one. This article takes Max Registry Cleaner for a test drive to see how well it performs, and if it makes our Windows XP machine run faster.

What is the Windows registry and why should you keep it clean?

Put simply, the Windows XP registry is an extensive database that stores your program settings, hardware data, desktop preferences, and much more. The problem with the registry is that it tends to accumulate lots of junk entries over time, slowing down your PC and causing your favorite applications to crash unexpectedly. Have your Windows XP ever thrown a "blue screen" on you? A common cause for this kind of behavior is errors in the registry. That's why using a registry fixer regularly to keep your registry junk-free is important -- it helps your PC run like new and at top speed.

How does Max Registry Cleaner take care of the registry problem?

Max Registry Cleaner is an easy-to-use registry repair tool designed to clean up the garbage in your Windows registry and thus improve the speed of your PC. The software fixes most registry errors that bog down your machine, including empty keys, erroneous DLL items, junk left from badly uninstalled software or spyware, bad or missing application shortcuts, and many more.

Does Max Registry make your PC run faster?

To answer this question, we first recorded the start up time of our Windows XP machine, which turned out to be 2 minutes and 5 seconds. Then we ran Max Registry Cleaner in auto-scan mode, and told it to identify all possible errors in the registry. Max Registry discovered 133 errors of all kinds, which makes sense, since the PC had XP installed for over a year, and we never did any registry housekeeping. Finally, we told the software to fix all errors, then rebooted, and measured the Windows start up time again.

Here's the results: An average Windows XP machine now booted in 1 minute and 20 seconds, which is a healthy 35% improvement. Another positive thing is that Outlook Express now launches almost instantly. (Before we repaired the corrupt registry, it used to take a full minute to launch.)

That said, we're pretty happy with Max Registry Cleaner, and will continue to test it under XP and Vista and make our findings publicly available.

If you are considering Max Registry Cleaner, but don't want to pay the full price, Chris offers Max Registry discounts (25% OFF), as well as Max Registry coupons at his site.

Copyright 2008 Chris Finders

Unless you fix your computer yourself, but usually this is a bad idea.

The reason you want to opt for a registry repair program instead is because of the risks that are involved with trying to fix this large database yourself. Before you even consider repairing it yourself, you need to realistically assess how much knowledge you have of computers. Even those who know a lot about how computers work usually try to find the best registry cleaner to do the job, because it is very easy to make mistakes, and even the smallest mistake can mean the end of your computer. Yes, the best registry cleaner will cost you money, but it is a small price to pay compared to the damage that you could do to your machine if you make a fatal mistake.

The best registry cleaner will be easy to use. You should not have to be an expert in computers to get it to work. Yet you should also look for a company that offers 24 hour customer support, 7 days a week, just in case you do have a question.

You will also want to find a program that offers a scan that is relatively quick, yet comprehensive. The underlying premise behind the utilization of registry fix software is to make the operating system function better and to maintain the stability of the system.

Understanding the principle behind the this type of software application, you may be left wondering whether it is worth the money. Obviously in this day and age you want to make sure that you spend your hard earned money on worthwhile products that really will improve the functionality and stability of your computer system.

At the outset, when considering whether or not you should invest in this type of software, you need to understand that there are more cheaply priced registry fix software products on the market. In other words, you can obtain less expensive software to clean your registry with little effort in this day and age.

The problem with the less expensive software that does not have an established track record - as opposed to the best registry fix software application - is that these less known versions run the risk of decreasing the functionality of your computer as well as rendering your operating system less stable. Obviously, in the long run it makes no sense to purchase a software application that might not effectively resolve registry issues but which very well may negatively impair the functionality of the computer.

When all is said and done, while you will have to spend a bit more money on the best registry fix software, in the end you will get your hands on a product that will meet your needs. The best registry fix software application will work to "clean up" your registry and will work to ensure the best possible functionality and stability for your computer's operating system.

RegCure registry cleaner software is very popular these days. However, many users keep asking if it's a good registry repair tool for Windows Vista. In this article, we discuss our experience of running RegCure Registry Optimizer on a Windows Vista machine.

Hardware and OS used in our tests

We tested RegCure on a Lenovo ThinkPad T61 Core 2 Duo, with a genuine Vista Ultimate installed. This machine is pretty fast as it is, but we wanted to run RegCure on it to see if optimizing the Vista registry could make this machine boot and work even faster.

Is RegCure for the average user?

It is. RegCure's user interface is very easy to understand and use. All the important features like scanning your registry for errors, performing registry backup, fixing the errors, configuring the program settings, and managing start up items are easily accessible.

How good is RegCure in detecting registry errors?

Most PC users know by this point that the Windows registry tends to accumulate a lot of junk the more you use your Vista. This explains the well-known fact that a brand-new Vista installation is significantly faster in the beginning, but gets slower and slower unless the registry is cleaned up at least once a week.

RegCure promises to easily discover and fix all registry errors so that your PC runs like new at all times. We'll see if it actually keeps its promise and makes your PC run faster, but it sure does dig deep to uncover all possible garbage in Vista's registry.

When we ran RegCure in auto-scan mode and told it to find all invalid items, RegCure detected 177 junk entries in our registry. This makes sense since the laptop had Vista installed for about 8 months, and we never did any registry cleaning.

Can RegCure make your PC or laptop run faster?

Before we scanned the registry with RegCure, we recorded the start up time of Vista, which turned out to be 2 minutes and 5 seconds. After RegCure fixed all errors, we took out our stopwatch again, and this time the machine took only 1 minute and 14 seconds to boot. An impressive 40% improvement!

Given the above results, we are pretty happy with RegCure, and will continue to test it on different flavors of Vista to see how well it performs.

If you're interested in buying RegCure but don't want to pay the full price, you can get a 35% RegCure discount coupon at Chris's site.

Copyright 2008 Chris Finders

An impressive 40% improvement!

Given the above results, we are pretty happy with RegCure, and will continue to test it on different flavors of Vista to see how well it performs.

If you're interested in buying RegCure but don't want to pay the full price, you can get a 35% RegCure discount coupon at Chris's site.

Copyright 2008 Chris Finders

With so many registry cleaners for Windows XP out there, users have a hard time choosing the right one for the job. That's why we decided to run some tests on a Lenovo laptop to determine which registry repair software is best suited for Windows XP.

Which registry cleaners were tested?

For the sake of simplicity, we decided to test two popular registry fixers compatible with Windows XP: Max Registry Cleaner, and RegCure Registry Optimizer. Both these registry tools are reputable programs with lots of features, and a modest price tag of $29.95, which makes them perfect for comparison.

Hardware and OS configuration

We tested Max Secure and RegCure on a Lenovo T42 Pentium M 735 1.7 GHz, 512 MB RAM laptop, with a 40GB hard drive. This machine had Windows XP with the latest SP3 installed.

Which registry fixer is easiest to use?

Both software programs sport an intuitive, easy to grasp user interface. No problems there. Both tools make all the critical features like scanning or backing up the Windows XP registry easy to access, so you'll probably find both of them very straightforward and easy to operate.

Which registry tool digs deeper to uncover all possible errors in the Windows XP registry?

Here's where it gets interesting. Max Secure discovered 327 errors, while RegCure managed to identify 429 invalid items in the registry. We ran both programs in Automatic Scan mode, and told them to find all possible registry errors. RegCure took longer to complete this task, but the result is more impressive, since it found 24% more junk in the registry than Max Secure.

Which registry software does a better job of cleaning up system junk?

To answer this question, we backed up the complete Windows XP registry using RegCure's backup feature, ran RegCure, told it to fix all errors, restored the erroneous registry, ran Max Secure, fixed all errors, and compared the results. This way, each program got a fair chance of repairing the registry.

We were pleased to see that both programs did a very good job cleaning up the registry junk. A subsequent scan showed no registry errors. Truth be told, Max Secure had a tiny bit of trouble in our test -- it didn't fix 4 errors on the first take, however the second take did the trick. This, however, is no big deal in our book.

So which registry cleaner is best for Windows XP?

This is for you to decide. Both these programs are very stable and have every feature a decent registry fixer needs. RegCure, however, did a little better in our specific tests. We'll continue to test both RegCure and Max Registry Cleaner under Windows XP and Vista, and see how they perform in different configurations.

If you're considering either of the above registry products, be sure to visit Chris' site for Max Registry discount coupon (25% OFF), as well as RegCure coupons (35% OFF).

Copyright 2008 Chris Finders

Sure RegCure is popular, but does it deliver the promised results? Should I purchase it? That's the question on many users' mind today. Read this article for an in-depth review before you consider buying RegCure.

To help smart shoppers make an informed decision, we've decided to take RegCure for a test drive to see how well it performs on a Windows XP Lenovo laptop. The laptop had Windows installed for 2 years and was getting pretty sluggish due to numerous registry errors and other garbage. A perfect testing ground for a registry cleaner to prove its worth!

The findings of our tests are described below.

Is the software easy to use?

Ease of use is definitely important since any popular software must comply with the "don't make me think" principle. Fortunately, RegCure is very intuitive. The user interface is well thought out and straightforward, with big buttons on the left side that make it easy to access all the important features of the application.

Is it safe?

The Windows XP or Vista registry is a critical data repository that holds all application settings, desktop preferences and hardware data. That's why changing the registry should not be taken lightly, and any serious registry cleaner should have proper features in place to ensure data integrity at all times.

Guys at RegCure seem to understand that, as the software comes with an advanced backup facility, which lets you easily roll back any changes you make. We tested this feature on our Windows XP laptop and it does work as advertised -- you can backup and restore your entire registry or individual items with a few clicks.

Does it make your PC faster?

To answer this question, we booted XP, took note of how long it took, then ran RegCure in automatic scan mode, told it to fix all registry errors, rebooted the machine, and compared.

The start up speed of our Lenovo box has reduced by 57 seconds, which is pretty impressive in our book, considering it took almost 2 minutes to boot before we ran RegCure. Actually, since the software uncovered 367 errors in the registry, it's not surprising the laptop used to be as slow as molasses. Note that the number of errors RegCure will identify on your machine will probably be different, depending on how old your PC or laptop is, and how much junk in the registry it accumulated.

We didn't experience application crashes or "blue screens" on this laptop, so we can't claim RegCure would fix those. One thing was certain, however -- our Windows box definitely got faster.

We will continue to test RegCure on XP and Vista machines in different configuration and make our findings publicly available so that shoppers can make an informed decision when buying RegCure or other registry repair software.

If you're considering RegCure Registry Cleaner, but don't want to pay the full price, you can buy RegCure with a 35% discount at Chris's site.

Chris also offers lots of other discounted software at BestPricePicker.Com.

Copyright 2008 Chris Finders

Registry cleaners are software solutions that weed through your computer's registry and remove any invalid entries or bad information. While most people know that their computer needs a spyware and adware program and something to remove viruses, they are less aware of their computer's need for a good registry cleaner. Here are five reasons why you need a registry cleaner for your computer, and what it can do for you.

Your computer continues to accumulate registry entries when you download programs, uninstall programs, visit certain websites, or accumulate spyware or adware in your computer. There is a lot of information stored in your registry and most of it is a waste of space. Deleting or uninstalling most programs does not get rid of the problem, leaving a requirement for a registry cleaning software program to do the work for them.

In addition to becoming stuffed full of registry entries, your computer's registry can also become cluttered and disorganized. Your registry cleaning software program will clear out this clutter, righting issues regarding missing references to files, DLL errors, runtime errors, Active X errors, driver errors and broken software threads. When errors like these begin to accumulate within your computer's registry, your computer's performance will be severely hampered. All of these errors can be quickly and easily repaired with a couple of clicks of your mouse.

In addition to your registry being stuffed full of files and errors and entries from legitimate programs, your registry can also be negatively affected by hackers, Trojans, adware, spyware and viruses. Unwanted and embedded entries that you cannot remove can be stored in your registry, allowing hackers and other bad people to get into your computer, manipulating it without your consent. Even your legitimate data can be compromised and even destroyed by these entries. Even if you do know how to deal with the REGEDIT function of your computer, many of these bad entries cannot be removed. Luckily registry cleaner software works in such a way that it can remove these foul entries, giving you control of your computer again.

Registry cleaners are easy to use, and do not require a lot of computer know how to operate. Downloading and installing a registry cleaner for your computer is simple and straight forward, and operating it is even easier as most come with a straight forward point-and-click interface.

The final reason for why registry cleaners are needed and indispensable is because it is nearly impossible to clean out your computer's registry manually. No matter how well you maintain your computer on a consistent basis, registry errors are still going to accumulate through ownership. You cannot simply open up your registry, find unwanted entries and delete them. The REGEDIT function on your computer is difficult to weed through, and quite confusing. Doing it your own self without registry cleane
